NIGERIA CRIME STATISTICS (2017)

Introduction

The data presented Nigeria’s crime statistics for the year 2017. It was provided by Dataleum in an excel file. Dataset was imported and loaded into Power Query for transformation before integration into Power BI. The dataset comprised two main tables: the Offence table and the State table. The Offence table featured columns such as the number of crimes, offence categories, offence sub-categories, and state, while the State table included columns for region and state.

Visualization process

A three page comprehensive report showing Nigeria’s crime figures was created with each page illustrating different aspects of the data.

The first page showcased visuals illustrating the top five states by total number of crimes, geopolitical regions ranked by crime rates, and specific crime figures for states in different regions. The page was filtered to display crimes committed against lawful authorities and included a slicer to further filter by sub-category.

First report page filtered by Offences against lawful authorities

The second page presented visuals mirroring those on the first page, emphasizing the top five states by overall crime count, geopolitical regions by crimes, and crime figures for specific states in different regions. The page was filtered to show crimes committed against persons and featured a sub-category slicer for advance filtering.

Second report page filtered by Offences against persons.

Lastly, the third page displayed visuals similar to the first two, and was filtered to focus on crimes committed against property and included a slicer for sub-category selection.
